What's actually happening when you "just breathe"? What's actually happening when you "just breathe"? Stress switches on your sympathetic nervous system - heart rate up, breath shallow, cortisol rising. 
Slow breathing switches on the brake - your parasympathetic nervous system, via the vagus nerve. 
Try this: inhale for 4, exhale for 6-8. Two minutes is enough to start shifting the balance.
